1. Use candles large enough to burn for at least 30 minutes. Many use olive oil to recall the original miracle in the Temple. The flames should be the same height, and preferably in a straight line.
2. The prevalent custom is to light the menorah indoors by a window facing the street. In Israel many light the menorah outside their front doorway.
3. The preferable time to light the menorah is at nightfall. It is best to light in the presence of many people in order to publicize the miracle.
4. Light the Shamash, the middle larger candle, recite the blessings, then use the Shamash to light the Hanukkah candles. Light the new candle added that day first.

Blessed are You, the Lord our God, King of the universe, Who sanctified us with His commandments, and commanded us to kindle the Hanukkah light.
Baruch ata Ado-noi Elo-heinu melech ha-olam, Shi-asa nee-seem la-avo-seinu, Baya-meem ha-haim baz-man ha-zeh.
בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְהֹוָה, אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, שֶׁעָשָׂה נִסִּים לַאֲבוֹתֵינוּ בַּיָּמִים הָהֵם בַּזְּמַן הַזֶּה.
Blessed are You, the Lord our God, King of the universe, Who made miracles for our forefathers, in those days at this season.
Baruch ata Ado-noi Elo-heinu melech ha-olam, Sheh-he-che-yanu vi-kee-yimanu Vi-hee-gee-yanu laz-man ha-zeh.
בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְהֹוָה, אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, שֶׁהֶחֱיָנוּ וְקִיְּמָנוּ וְהִגִּיעָנוּ לַזְּמַן הַזֶּה.
Blessed are You, the Lord our God, King of the universe, Who has kept us alive, sustained us, and brought us to this season.
